  • Automation Engineer - Cloud/UI

    Create test frameworks to put our autonomous aerial systems through the wringer.

    Airware’s next-generation commercial drone platform extends beyond embedded hardware and software to include desktop applications to configure and control unmanned aircraft as well as our Airware Cloud Platform, connecting everything together.  The Airware Cloud plays a critical role in transforming drones from flying robots into viable business tools.

    Responsibilities

    • The Automation Engineer will help build and maintain a platform that ensures test and deployment operations for front end and backend systems are reliable, intuitive, and automated

    • Write additional tools to:

      • Collect, store and analyze data
      • Report on results and performance
      • Tie build, test and deployment systems together
      • Integrate with other SaaS like SauceLabs, AppliTools, etc.
    • Work with the development teams to ensure Airware products are testable and can be automated
    • Gather needs and requirements from the software development and test teams to improve existing tools or create new ones

    Necessary Skills and Experience

    • Strong JavaScript background
    • Building and/or testing REST APIs

    Responsibilities

    Specific responsibilities vary by project area. Depending on your background and experience, you could find yourself working with the team in one or more of the project areas below:

     

    Software Engineering – Ground Control Station

    • Create an elegant, user-friendly interface to allow the user to safely fly and land multiple types of aircraft

    • Determine how to detect and represent obstacles and hazards--from terrain elevation to nearby aircraft

    • Join the flight testing team to operate the GCS in the field, evaluating usability and efficiency for typical missions and tasks--collect internal and external user feedback and propose interface design improvements

    • Build clean MVVM architecture that will be compatible across a variety of platforms

      

    Embedded Software Engineering

    • Architect and implement a real-time messaging framework for efficiently passing data between local and remote software processes.

    • Write low-level hardware drivers to read sensors (like gyros and accelerometers) that interface with high-level algorithms (like inertial estimation filters).

    • Optimize the execution of safety-critical processes running within a real-time embedded operating system, juggling Flash, RAM, processing and timing constraints.

    • Develop a system data logger that interfaces with the real-time messaging framework and records key flight telemetry and system fault data.

     

    Software Engineering

    • Architect and implement a real-time messaging framework for efficiently passing data between local and remote software processes

    • Architect and implement a state machine that coordinates the mode sequencing between our flight core (autopilot) and the other dependent components in our distributed system

    • Develop a system data logger that interfaces with the real-time messaging framework and records key flight telemetry and system fault data

     

    Web Development

    • Build a web-based, front-end application that gives access to telemetry, media, and other information through our APIs

    • Display aircraft flight paths in real time on a map

    • Improve user experience by optimizing interactions with data and media in the app

       

    About You

    You should have a genuine passion for your craft, solid programming capabilities and an insatiable curiosity about technology and how things work. You’ll build upon your solid foundation in computer science, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering in order to gain a deep understanding of our product and projects and continually improve upon them. We focus on being a collaborative team of engineers who have solid technical chops and an eye for quality.

     

    Qualifications

    Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or above in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related technical field.

  • IP Counsel

    Manage and identify IP for cutting-edge drone technology.

    Airware is innovating technology in an emerging market and we need an Intellectual Property Counsel to ensure that our inventions are protected.This person will contribute to the success of our IP strategy by developing and maintaining the company’s patent portfolio. Our IP Counsel will drive strategy, processes and management of Airware’s IP assets, building and managing IP that supports Airware’s technology goals within the operation of commercial drones.

    Our IP Counsel will work closely with our Engineering and R&D teams to identify patentable inventions, and understand our business priorities and challenges in order to incorporate those inventions into a comprehensive IP strategy. He or she will also collaborate with our financial, business development and market experts to assess the commercial value of each innovation and evaluate further investments in protecting that property. He or she will prepare and file high quality, strategic patents and ensure innovation is continuously identified and captured through the IP protection process.  He or she will also work with outside counsel to prepare trademark applications and manage the trademark portfolio.

  • Lead UAV Operator

    Demo the newest commercial drone systems for Airware’s customers and partners. Plan, fly, and deliver aerial data for a variety of applications that are enabled by Airware’s next-generation commercial drone platform.

    The Lead UAV Operator will lead a team, plan, coordinate and execute flight demonstrations of Airware’s product features for clients. You’ll be responsible for representing the Airware vision for how aerial data collection with commercial drones should be carried out. You will be expected to manage all aspects of UAV missions, from pre-flight inspections on the aircraft, to setting up the payload, to flight planning and execution, and post-flight processing of collected data. 

    Responsibilities

    • Plan flight operations: ensure everything is ready and tested on time, coordinate regulatory permissions, generate flight paths to properly collect aerial data.
    • Onsite preparation: validation flights, set up sensors, set up ground control points for aerial surveys.
    • Demoing solutions: complete pre-flight checklists, fly aircraft and collect aerial data.
    • Validate aerial data: locally post-process collected data and present / discuss results with customers.
    • Perform maintenance on aircraft, as necessary.
    • Travel around the US/world flying UAVs, being on time when and where needed. Pack and ship aircraft and equipment, and coordinate customs paperwork and transportation of goods.
    • Provide feedback to product and engineering teams.

    Necessary Skills and Experience

    • Building, testing, and operating commercial UAVs
    • Able to evaluate the quality of acquired aerial data
    • Basic post-processing techniques for aerial data
    • Excellent RC piloting skills, on both fixed-wing and multirotor aircraft

  • Production Lead

    Configure, test, and calibrate the next-generation Aerial Information Systems that power commercial drone technology.

    Airware is building the world’s first extensible platform for commercial drones, creating a rare opportunity for an experienced, quality-focused Production Lead. In this role, our Production Lead will configure, test, and calibrate finished level printed circuit board assemblies, perform light mechanical assembly, package, and ship our products.   • UAS Integration Engineer

    Share your expertise in UAS with our internal teams and customers alike to ensure the successful flights of commercial drones leveraging Airware's Platform.

    Our customers are using Airware's platform in exciting ways! As the UAS Integration Engineer you'll work closely with customers to integrate the Airware Aerial Information Platform into their commercial drones. In this highly-visible role, you'll not only be the technical expert, you'll represent our team, our brand and our entire company!

    Responsibilities

    Engineering:

    • Perform engineering design work to integrate our products with customer vehicles for a variety of applications
    • Perform mechanical & electrical engineering integration work on internally used vehicles for R&D testing and pre-product release engineering development
    • Act as a dedicated member of the flight testing team, performing internal testing of our products
    • Incorporate new technologies, especially novel airframes and cutting edge sensors with our platform to enable a world of commercial UAS applications

    Team Collaboration:

    • Own and build best practices for implementation, testing, and support of the platform
    • Be a strong contributor to documenting our processes and practices as we shape the reliable operation of commercial drones
    • Drive collaboration with Airware software engineers, business development, and customer support to weave customer feedback and feature requests into Airware’s overall development lifecycle

    Ensuring Customer Success:

    • Define and execute system acceptance test plans for all our products, from bench-testing through flight testing
    • Work in a hands-on manner to integrate Airware products with customer systems

  • UAV Flight Controls Engineer

    Best part of working at Airware? We get to see our work fly!

    Airware Flight Controls Engineers take projects from concept and design to test and flight. You’ll work closely on the development of our autopilot software which is responsible for controlling all aspects of flight on a variety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. Projects range from high-level vehicle guidance logic to low-level control loops and navigation filters.

    Sample projects

    • Design flight path guidance logic in Simulink, lead implementation on real-time embedded hardware, debug using a hardware-in-the-loop simulator and perform flight testing.
    • Utilize advanced control techniques to improve autopilot robustness to a wide range of aircraft types and flight conditions.

    • Augment the inertial navigation system with a wind speed/direction estimation filter, verifying expected accuracy and numerical stability.

    Necessary skills and experience

    • Experience designing a variety of flight controllers in MATLAB/Simulink, analysis through formal stability criteria, non-linear simulation, and flight testing in the field.
    • Proven ability to implement flight software on real-time embedded systems.
    • Working knowledge of inertial navigation systems and state estimation filters (including Extended Kalman Filters).
    • Ability to analyze flight data and produce actionable conclusions.
    • Hands-on experience with electronics, embedded systems, autopilots, or robotics.
