  • UAV Flight Controls Engineer

Best part of working at Airware? We get to see our work fly!

Airware Flight Controls Engineers take projects from concept and design to test and flight. You’ll work closely on the development of our autopilot software which is responsible for controlling all aspects of flight on a variety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. Projects range from high-level vehicle guidance logic to low-level control loops and navigation filters.

    Sample projects

    • Implement a high-level contingency manager that makes decisions autonomously during off-nominal flight conditions.
    • Design a multi-modal altitude tracking controller in Simulink, guide implementation through to real-time embedded hardware, debug using a hardware-in-the-loop simulator and perform flight testing.
    • Augment the inertial navigation system with a wind speed/direction estimation filter, verifying expected accuracy and numerical stability.

    Necessary skills and experience

    • Experience designing a variety of flight controllers in MATLAB/Simulink, analysis through formal stability criteria, non-linear simulation, and flight testing in the field.
    • Proven ability to implement controllers in object-oriented languages like C++ on real-time embedded systems.
    • Working knowledge of inertial navigation systems and state estimation filters (including Extended Kalman Filters).
    • Hands-on experience with electronics, embedded systems, autopilots, or robotics.
    • You have drones in your basement.

How to apply and what to expect

    • Apply online. In addition to a resume, please include a short explanation of your background, accomplishments (links to past projects are always helpful), and what excites you about Airware. This will help us to get a multi-dimensional view of who you are and connect you to the right person at Airware quickly.
    • Be prepared to have a detailed technical discussion with one of our engineers through a Skype session.
    • Be prepared to spend a half-day at our office to meet the Airware team, geek out with our engineers, design a few control loops, and check out all of our toys.

At Airware I get to focus exclusively on the future of drone technology. It’s great to work with a team that’s open-minded and excited about what this space might look like a few years from now. We’re building the foundation for a new kind of UAV, new kinds of software applications, and support for today’s sensors as well as technology nobody’s even thought of yet.

Our team is actively engaged with the FAA and other international regulatory agencies as they finalize new UAS regulations. Seeing this space open up is exciting, and I'm constantly amazed at how many applications are possible in different industries. It’s really fun to work with smart people on these issues, and I think Airware is in a great position to make it all possible.

We’ve been working with a group of medical students at MIT-Gates who are experimenting with using drones to deliver vaccines to remote villages in Africa. Their enthusiasm for the project is contagious, and I love supporting them in the field as they make progress. It’s great to be a part of something like this at Airware.
